Snow Day in NYC

centralparksnow2013

This weekend brought us a ton of snow. I was actually pretty thrilled about it, since I really love seeing the city frosted in a fresh blanket of powder. I grew up in New England where a few feet of snow at a time is a pretty regular thing, so it’s always pretty funny for me to watch the reaction of New Yorkers when the city gets more than an inch.

The weather was the perfect excuse for me to lay low and enjoy the finer things in life, such as pizza delivery, excessive magazine reading, and cup upon steaming cup of hot tea.

We wandered a little on Saturday so that we could scope out the park and enjoy the snow before it got all dirty and melty (it didn’t take long!). The photo above is of Central Park, which I found to be looking particularly magical. Our only regret was that we were too late to buy a sled (literally, sold out everywhere) and join with our neighbors on the hill!

Sweater Weather

Here we go, guys! Remember that horrible, cold, depressing time of year that I wrote about a few weeks ago? It is upon us, and the chances of it letting up any time soon are pretty slim! It was cold (freezing!) and snowy all weekend, and I am already over it. We had a strange relapse into 40-degree weather yesterday (and more in the forecast for today), but I won’t be fooled — it will stay warm-ish for just long enough to catch us off guard, and then BAM! The freezing weather will sneak in again, and make us wish for spring to come even quicker.

Winter Wonderland

So, it’s safe to say that I’m already more than just a little sick of the cold weather in New York. We’ve had record amounts of snow accumulation in the past few weeks, which makes simple things like getting from my apartment to the subway a bit of a challenge. But then I realize how pretty the snow flurries look outside my window, or see this HUGE snowman that someone on my street builds every time there’s a storm, and I’m thankful that I live in a city where we have distinctive seasons. Here’s hoping that you’re keeping warm, wherever you are!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside!

As I type this, it is SNOWING in New York City! Since I grew up in New England I’m really not a stranger to snow, but it is still a little bit exciting to watch the first snowfall (from inside my apartment with hot chocolate in hand, of course). However, on my way home tonight I realized that the arrival of snow means that my ears will promptly begin freezing every time I leave my apartment. This wouldn’t be such a problem if not for one, tiny detail: I HATE hats.

My poor boyfriend has been lovingly trying to purchase a hat for me for years, insisting that he’ll pay for whatever hat I want (within reason) as long as I keep my head covered and protected from the elements. Every year, I refuse after deciding once again that hats look awful on me. Well folks, this might be the year that I finally give in and get a hat. My ears were freezing a little too much for my liking this evening, so I present to you Kristen’s List of Possibly Acceptable Hat Options for Winter 2010-2011:

Asos Knitted Turban ($24.14) — I really love the idea of a turban-style hat, and this one looks cozy, is affordable, and isn’t an in-your-face fortune teller turban.

Catarzi Felt Floppy Hat ($51.72) — So I’m not sure how warm this would keep my ears, but they do say that most of the heat in your body escapes through your head, and that’s covered! I really just love the sophisticated look of a real hat like this one!

Michael Kors Pyramid-Stud Earmuffs ($48) — I’ve never owned a pair of earmuffs, but I’ve been thinking about them seriously since one of my biggest gripes about hats is the hair-messing factor. Also, earmuffs often look sort of generic or boring to me, but I’m really loving the studs that give these a little bit of personality!

Any suggestions for functional-yet-cute hats? Let me know!
