Wishful Thinking: Biarritz, France

I try not to have too many regrets, but I do wish that I had studied or worked abroad during college. I once had the opportunity to be an au pair for the summer for two little kids in the surfer town of Biarritz, France, but I turned it down for a job here that would allow me to continue throughout the school year. I guess I was so concerned with how I was going to pay for college that I didn’t think it made a lot of sense, but I sort of wish that I’d taken it.

Even though I missed that initial opportunity, I really do intend on getting there sometime soon. I’m not a surfer, but everything I’ve read about the city sounds sort of laid-back and cool. Even my Swiss friend who is not all too fond of France tells me that the coolest French people live in Biarritz. As someone who has studied and spoken French for a long time, I’m definitely looking for not only a great location but also people who are willing to chat. Like many other travelers before me, I found that Parisians would often answer my questions in English, even if I posed them in French. I won’t claim to be fluent, but I can hold my own in French conversation. Come on, Paris.

I’m going to keep searching for reasonable airfare (there was a cool piece on The Lost Girls today about finding good prices), but until then I’ll just keep dreaming!

Thanks to RLasaosa on Flickr for the amazing photo above!
